Fentanyl is available in many forms. Pharmaceutical fentanyl is used for managing acute or chronic pain, illicit fentanyl can be manufactured for use in the illegal drug market and in addition there are currently over 40 fentanyl analogues (see page 6) that vary in strength, effects and toxicity. For the purpose of this information sheet, the term fentanyls will be used to cover all of these variations.
